Early Detection Saves Lives

Henschke, C. I., Yip, R., Yankelevitz, D. F., Smith, J. P., Libby, D. M., Pasmantier, M. W., ... & Miettinen, O. S. (2023). A 20-year follow-up of the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP). Radiology, 309(2), e231988. https://doi.org/10.1148/radiol.231988

Who is eligible?

All LA City Firefighters are eligible for this screening. You will only need the referral form from your Union Medical Director or your primary care physician.

What about cost?

There is NO COST for the screening. The Lung Health Coalition is covering all costs of this screening program. If your screening indicates a need for clinical follow-up, consult your insurance or workers’ compensation program.

What happens after screening?

A team is ready to guide you. A dedicated team of navigators will help you with next steps. It is important that you communicate with your Union Medical Director to discuss findings/concerns.

Why should I be screened?

Due to exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other hazardous material, firefighters have an increased risk of contracting lung cancer and other lung diseases. Treatment is most likely to be successful when lung disease is detected in the early stages.¹ Lung screening is the best means of early detection.

We use low-dose CT (LDCT) screening, which is the only exam currently proven to reduce lung cancer deaths.² This simple, non-invasive exam only takes a few minutes. LDCT is endorsed by multiple health organizations and is the gold standard of lung cancer screening.³

LDCT also helps detect these other health conditions:

  • coronary artery calcification
  • lung nodules
  • signs of COPD (such as emphysema)
  • lung infections
  • pneumonia
  • fibrosis or scarring
